If there were any doubts before this season that the Chelsea Academy was stocked full of premium talent, surely those have all been put to bed.
One of the latest down the pipeline this season has been Ian Maatsen, one of a club-record eight to make his senior debut. The young left back has today, on his 18th birthday, signed a new long-term contract, extending his stay with the club until June 2024!
Maatsen’s contract was set to expire at the end of next season, so getting this done in time was of utmost importance.
It’s been a great season for Maatsen already. In addition to his senior debut, he’s been highly involved in Chelsea’s efforts in the Premier League 2, where the U23 team remains unbeaten, as well as in the FA Youth Cup, where we’re into the semifinals.
The former Feyenoord and PSV prospect looking forward to more of the same in the future.
“I’m very happy to have signed a new contract at this club. The journey continues and I already can’t wait to get the next season started once we have finished this one.
“The season for me has been quite good. In the Academy, we were unlucky to not progress in the UEFA Youth League but I was very happy to make my first team debut. Next season I have to keep pushing and give the same performances.
“We need to make sure we win the FA Youth Cup this year and in the Under-23s league we are unbeaten so we have to make sure we continue the good work.”
