‘Fight, run, hurt’: Jorginho urges Chelsea to keep cool and calm against Bayern

Although Chelsea were far from perfect, we did more than enough to beat Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge this weekend. Lads, it’s just Tottenham, as they saying goes, but Chelsea did so without too many issues overall, able to bury our chances, keep steady at the back, and not even get screwed over by VAR, as much as it tried.

As with previous victories over London rivals, we can only hope this is a turning point for the season after the inconsistencies of the last few months. Vice-captain Jorginho is certainly hoping to build on this confidence boost and keep the spirit of victory alive against Bayern in the Champions League Round of 16 today.

It will be a big occasion, to say the least, especially if Chelsea are to try to fulfill European ambitions in the new youth revolution era.

“Of course it is very important for our confidence to win after the loss against United. Saturday was very important for us, we knew that.

“When you create and defend, I think you need to be more aggressive and have more belief. On Saturday [against Tottenham] we were helping each other and that is very important. We need to keep doing this.

“[We need to] fight, run, hurt. We need to believe in ourselves on the ball. When we have to defend we have to defend together and that is it, that is what it takes to win big games.”

Chelsea have put together a few tremendous games — even if the results haven’t always matched them — and we’ll surely need another near-perfect performance today if we are to have any chance. At the same time, we must remember that this is a 180-minute tie, and we cannot fall apart at the first sign of trouble — an all-too-worrying trend that has plagued the team over the past couple seasons in fact.

“To be careful, to be focused on some details because in big games it is like this. There are two games [against Bayern], so we can’t lose our mind and go crazy if something goes wrong. We need to be quiet, be smart for that.”
