Official: Jacob Maddox joins Southampton on loan from Chelsea

From League One to Premier League football

More often than not, loan stints do not work out because of factors beyond a player’s control. Such was the case for midfielder Jacob Maddox, who returned to Chelsea from League One club Tranmere Rovers last month as injury limited his time on the pitch.

Thankfully, it did not take long for him to find a new loan destination as he joined Premier League outfit Southampton on loan for the rest of the season today.

Before making just two appearances for Tranmere in the EFL Trophy earlier this season, Maddox made his professional debut at Cheltenham Town in League Two during the 2018-19 term. He was quite successful with the Robins, scoring 4 goals and recording 2 assists in 44 matches across all competitions.

At first glance, the jump from League One football to the Premier League might be a bit too high for Maddox. But there must be good reason for Southampton to demand him in the first place, and for Chelsea to agree sending him to a fellow top league team.

Good luck out there, Maddox!
