Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard kept things positive last night in his post-match comments after the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the Bridge, and that message has been echoed by his players as well.
I suppose you have to do that. It’s the more constructive way forward. And the team did play better than on Saturday against Arsenal, for whatever that’s worth, which we can only hope is something at least semi-tangible. 1 point!
Chilwell certainly seems to believe so, and ‘tis the season to believe.
“It is a draw at home and we want to be winning these games but the effort and the performance was a lot better in this game. The mentality was the main thing we wanted from it, that was better.
“I know it is disappointing we have drawn the game but we have to look at the positives, which is 48 hours later after a pretty poor performance we have played well and shown good character.”
I’d argue that the main thing we want from the vast majority of games is three points, but there’s little we can do now beyond settling for the moral victory. Chicken soup for the soul it ain’t.
“At the moment we are not quite getting the rub of the green, maybe on another day [my shot at the end] goes in, but we will keep working hard and try to put things right.”

Chilwell set up Chelsea’s only goal of the night and his spectacular volley in the final minute barely missed, grazing the outside of the far post. Mentality and character couldn’t quite bend the laws of physics to move that shot a couple inches to the left.
But perhaps they will be enough for us to turn things around and get out of this “funny patch”.
