Havertz swayed by Chelsea’s ambitious visions of the future

Kai Havertz may be dealing with COVID-19 at the moment, but by the time Premier League football resumes in about ten days, he should be free and clear and able to rejoin the team. Chelsea are facing wall-to-wall action from mid-November to late March, and we’re going to need all the players, let alone our record non-goalkeeping signing.

In many ways, Havertz choosing Chelsea this summer felt reminscient of a similarly 21-year-old Eden Hazard choosing Chelsea in 2012. Both were the most highly coveted players in Europe at the time, but while Hazard chose Chelsea (in large part) because of our Champions League victory that year, Havertz chose Chelsea (in large part) because of our ambitions to return to that pinnacle for the first time since.

“To me, it was important to have a club with a vision. The club is on the move. We are a young team with a lot of great players. We think aggressively. We want to build something here and attack. This motivates me. And then, a title with Chelsea is just worth more.”

While Havertz doesn’t follow that “more” with a “than” and a team name, considering that he was most strongly linked with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in addition to the Blues, it’s safe to finish that sentence like that for him.

Essentially, Chelsea were the bigger challenge, and also a slightly smaller stage, but ultimately the opportunity to achieve even bigger greatness. Winning with Bayern or Real is a lot easier than winning with Chelsea, even after our successes in the last couple decades and the investments that have gone along with it.

“A transfer like this doesn’t happen overnight. I had enough to go through all options and things which are important to me. I was watching a lot of Premier League on TV anyhow and knew Chelsea really well.”
