South London Press’s Paul Lagan is reporting that Chelsea are “sweating the fitness” of Thiago Silva ahead of tomorrow’s showdown at Old Trafford because the veteran center back is carrying a hip injury.
And we had just about cleared the injury slate!
This is the first time we’re hearing of any injury issue with Silva, who played the full 90 on Tuesday against Sevilla, but apparently did so while in “discomfort” from said problem. The 36-year-old was held out of last weekend’s match against Southampton following a busy and tiring international break (lots of games and travel), though there was no report of any actual injury at that time and the move seemed precautionary more than anything. But perhaps he had already been affected to some extent.
We’ll see if Lampard has any updates regarding Thiago’s fitness in the pre-match press conference coming up in a few hours. Given Chelsea’s busy schedule, there’s not much time to rest and recover, though our midweek Champions League tie is against Krasnodar, so it’s probably much more imperative that Silva is fit for tomorrow’s match against Manchester United instead.
