1. ÉDOUARD MENDY (7.8)

Newly and now officially anointed Chelsea No.1 goalkeeper, Édouard Mendy didn’t really have that much to do in his Champions League debut, but what he did have to do, he did so safely, comfortably, and confidently. Sure, a couple of his medium-range goal kicks aimed towards an advancing full back on the touchline were overhit, but that was just about the only memorable non-positive of his performance.

He was strong in the air, good enough with his feet, faultless in his decision-making (case in point: urging Zouma to just hack it clear instead of playing a risky back pass), and most importantly, made a save that looked decent enough in live time but ever more spectacular with each slow-motion replay. Not only did he get a hand to the deflected header reflexively, but was also able to get enough power behind it to claw it away from the goalmouth (with two Sevilla players crashing), from where we were able to clear.

2. BEN CHILWELL (7.3)

On Saturday, we had a party up front and a calamity at the back. On Tuesday, the party moved to the back. But there was one player who got to attend both parties.

Ben Chilwell was the fourth highest rated player in the 3-3 draw against Southampton thanks to his attacking contributions. Now he’s the second highest rating, thanks to his defensive contributions.

So far so good then for the high-priced left back.

3. THIAGO SILVA (7.2)

Completing the summer signing trio on the podium in this one is the veteran center back, who instantly makes the defense look more solid even after this howler against West Brom a few weeks ago.
