The annual Golden Boy award process is down to its final step, and the final shortlist of nominees for Europe’s best under-21 player (as voted on by various journalists and administered by Tuttosport).
As usual, this started as a list 100-strong, which included four Chelsea youngsters, Tino Anjorin, Ethan Ampadu, Billy Gilmour, and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Over the past four months, this has been whittled down to 20, while Chelsea’s quarter is now just a single act. And that one “Golden Boy” is of course Callum Hudson-Odoi, jewel of the Academy and the apple of Bayern Munich’s proverbial eye.
Considering the other 19 nominees, this is certainly a fantastic recognition for Callum, just as it was last year for Mason Mount. CHO may not win it this year — one of Erling Håland, Jadon Sancho, or Alphonso Davies probably will — but he’s got a couple more years of eligibility left (and there has never been a repeat winner).
The final 20 nominees for the 2020 Golden Boy Award are:
Mitchel Bakker (PSG)
Eduardo Camavinga (Rennes)
Jonathan David (Lille)
Alphonse Davies (Bayern)
Sergiño Dest (Barcelona)
Fábio Silva (Wolves)
Ansu Fati (Barcelona)
Phil Foden (Manchester City)
Ryan Gravenberch (Ajax Amsterdam)
Mason Greenwood (Manchester United)
Erling Håland (BVB)
CALLUM HUDSON-ODOI (CHELSEA)
Dejan Kulusevski (Juventus)
Rodrygo Goes (Real Madrid)
Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
Jadon Sancho (BVB)
Dominik Szoboszlai (RB Salzburg)
Sandro Tonali (Brescia)
