Summer is over. Fall (autumn, if you will) is here. Winter is coming. The squads for the first first-half of the 2019-20 season are now set, submitted, and confirmed. Except for a few edge cases (emergency goalkeeper, youths), they cannot be changed until the winter transfer window.

The rules are the same as for the last several years. No more than 25 players can be registered (including 2 goalkeepers minimum), of whom no more than 17 can be “non-homegrown”. That doesn’t mean you have to register 8 “homegrown” players — it’s not a quota that must be met — but then the overall number registered will be less than 25. UEFA also make a distinction between “club-trained” and “association trained”, and no more than 4 can be included from the latter among the 8 “homegrown” (“locally trained”) players. You can have more than 4 “association trained” players overall, but then the excess have to be registered essentially as non-homegrown.

Teams can also fill the squad with an unlimited number of under-21 players (“List B”, as UEFA call it), which is quite important in Chelsea’s case this season.

PREMIER LEAGUE

In what may be our lowest number ever, Chelsea have registered only 19 senior players of the 25 allowed. We registered roughly six billion kids however (everybody in the academy), many of whom will be (and already are) key parts of the team.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The main difference is that Christian Pulisic does not count as a youth player as he did not spend at least three years on Chelsea’s books between the ages of 15 and 21. So he has to registered as non-homegrown. Our initial squad also includes 7 players on List B, but these can be changed prior to each and every game if we need to include others.

non-HG (15): Alonso, Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Batshuayi, Caballero, Emerson, Giroud, Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic, Pedro, Pulisic, Rudiger, Willian, Zouma

Association-trained (1): Barkley

Club-trained (4): Abraham, Christensen, Loftus-Cheek, Tomori

U21 (7+): Cumming, Gilmour, Guehi, Hudson-Odoi, James, McEachran, Mount
