Carabao in our cups

Chelsea (and Frank Lampard) are still looking for that elusive first home victory of the season, in any competition, but surely that’s all going to happen finally tonight, when fourth division Grimsby Town visit for a League Cup (Carabao Cup) third round contest.

While Cup competitions are synonymous with giant-killings, with single-elimination matches often serving up most strange and shocking outcomes, surely everyone at Chelsea, old and young, will be properly motivated to see out the expected result on Wednesday night.

Ahead of the match, Chelsea got in at least one serious day of training as well, with the full squad except the injured quartet — Emerson, Antonio Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen, Ruben Loftus-Cheek — all taking part in the wet conditions at Cobham.

Lampard is expected to fully rotate the squad and hand out a couple more senior debuts — none of Marc Guehi, Ian Maatsen, Tino Anjorin, or Billy Gilmour played in the Development Squad’s 2-1 loss to Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy group stage on Tuesday — though we also mustn’t look past a team with nothing to lose and only glory to gain from a big day out in Londontown.

Work work work, it never stops!
