Chelsea switch gears from the big names and big occasions of the Premier League and the Champions League, to the lowly League Cup and a third round match against fourth division Grimsby Town.
It’s an obvious opportunity to rest, rotate, and reintroduce certain players who have not featured much in the last few days and weeks, be that for fitness or form.
Frank Lampard already confirmed that Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James will make their season debuts in this one, though he did not specify if they would start.
Fellow youngsters Marc Guehi (center back), Ian Maatsen (left back), and Billy Gilmour (central midfield) could all be available for selection — the Development Squad plays tonight in the EFL Trophy against Bristol Rovers, which could be an indicator (a contrarian one, to be exact) in that regard.
It wouldn’t be this season if we didn’t also have some new injury issues to deal with, after both Emerson and Andreas Christensen had to be withdrawn in the fist half against Liverpool with a hamstring strain and a knee-impact injury, respectively. Antonio Rüdiger remains out as well.
