We have to wait until just about the end of the weekend to see Chelsea play, but that does give us an extra 24 hours to try to recover a couple key players. Mason Mount and N’Golo Kanté, both dealing with ankle problems, remain in contention for Sunday’s match. Mount may need some industrial strength pain-killers and strapping, while Kanté is not quite match fit, but they’re both certainly determined enough so they couldn’t definitely be ruled out by Frank Lampard in today’s press conference.
Other players are not as close, including Antonio Rüdiger, who has not even featured in training this week, and Emerson, who has, but is apparently not over his thigh injury from the international break. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James are both working their way back as well, but are not expected to feature until the next match, the midweek League Cup third round tie against Grimsby Town.
Lampard did not rotate for Tuesday’s loss against Valencia, and that raised some concerns both at the time and what it might mean for this weekend.
