Just 1 Chelsea player among top 100 players in FIFA 20

As part of the Championship/Football Manager tribe — CM 01/02 fo’eva! — the obsession with FIFA is lost on me, but it’s a massive thing among both fans and the actual players, so here we are having to at least touch on it.

To be fair, EA Sports certainly do marketing right: no one’s doing “Football Manager ratings revealed” videos, but the FIFA card nonsense is everywhere, including at Chelsea.

With the latest iteration of this long-running series due out later this month — I remember playing FIFA 96, which needed a 486 processor, 8MB of RAM, and an SVGA video card to run, and wow how old am I? — EA have revealed the top 100 players in the game, complete with their overall ratings.

Perhaps to no one’s surprise, there is only one (1) Chelsea player among the top 100, N’Golo Kante, who slots in at No.18 with an overall rating of 89. I’m assuming that’s pretty good, considering that the highest rated player in the game, Lionel Messi is at 94, and only six players are above 90. Two of those six are ex-Chelsea players, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne, both of whom are rated at 91. Miss you guys!

There are four more ex-Chelsea in the top 100, including Mohamed Salah (No.8 with 90 rating), Thibaut Courtois (No.39 with 88), Romelu Lukaku (No.86 with 85).

Obviously, ratings don’t mean anything in the real world, and it’s a mystery how they’re even assigned — Kante’s rating is 89, but none of the six sub-ratings are that high? — but the current situation does mean that the Chelsea squad is not quite as highly regarded as in the last decade and a half, though that surely isn’t a surprise. We’ll just have to develop our current youngsters into Top 100 FIFA players!
