He was not even supposed to be there today!
Ross Barkley was set for a day of sitting on the bench and maybe making a brief cameo towards the end of the game against Norwich City on Saturday, but thanks to an injury to Pedro in the pre-match warm-up, the midfielder was drafted into the starting lineup at the last minute.
That quick shift could explain why the preseason god had such a (relatively) poor showing overall in midfield, playing alongside Mateo Kovačić and Jorginho, but he did manage this one dribbling sequence that reminded many, including BT Sports commentator Peter Drury of a certain Diego Maradona — minus the finishing of course, with Barkley eventually laying the ball off for a shot from someone else instead of taking the responsibility himself.
Enjoy.
