PICTURES: First day of training for Lampard’s Chelsea

The work begins

Chelsea arrived in Dublin on Friday and wasted little time in getting to work for the first (light) training session of the 2019-20 preseason.

As per the official website, the session consisted of a warm-up, some unspecified fitness work, small-sided drills, and a quick dip in the ice bath, before heading in for dinner at the Carton House luxury resort.

Sounds like a fairly standard and easy-going first session then, which is probably a good way to kick off what will be a very important summer of figuring out who of the number of loanees and/or youth academy graduates might come in and join the first-team now that we’ve decided to accept the transfer ban punishment starting this summer.

There are currently 22 players involved in training, but more are expected to join starting next week, including the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount. Not all will be able to win a place in the squad of course — there’s only so many spots to go around — but there’s a real sense that they all have a good chance (a clean slate, as Lamps put it in his press conference) to impress.

Right, Kurt?
