Wants him to stay

One of four key players whose contract is expiring at the end of the season, Willian was last week reported to have agreed a new extension with the club.

In his post-match comments after yesterday’s friendly win over Reading, Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard didn’t quite go as far, but he did confirm that talks are ongoing, just as they are with Callum Hudson-Odoi. (Pedro is only hoping for similar treatment while Giroud has just agreed to his extension for this season.)

“I know the club are talking to Willian. They’re both players I want in my squad.

”We’ve made good moves in pre-season. Mason Mount and [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek signed new contracts, that’s two good young players nailed down. We’re always trying to do that. From a football sense, I make my ideas clear and work very closely with [Chelsea director] Marina [Granovskaia] and the board and they’re two players we want to stay for sure.”

Chelsea recently broke with club policy and handed David Luiz a two-year extension despite being over 30. Willian still has a year left on his deal, so an extension through 2021 would technically only be a one-year addition. Either way, it sounds like it will be getting done soon after Willian, Chelsea’s new No.10, probably, returns from his extended holidays and post-Copa América injury recovery in Brazil.
