Nike’s recent efforts in the Chelsea shirt-making department have had rather mixed receptions, but they’re keeping this season’s away kit nice and simple and classic.
The 2019-20 away kits, as they had been rumored for some time, will be plain white (no all-over print, for once!) with a blue and red trim on the sleeves and collar. And no weird collar this time either, just a straightforward two-button placket. Basically, it’s a lovely white polo shirt with a Chelsea badge and some sponsors.
According to Nike, the style was “inspired by the Mod culture that thrived on the King’s Road, a short walk from Stamford Bridge, in the 1960s”. Like all good fashion, the simple and classic style has endured over the years.
Obviously, some might prefer something a bit more complex and might look at the design as lazy. But it’s a welcome change of pace after the busy home shirt and the try-hard third kit.
The white shirt will be matched with white shorts and blue socks, just as in 2017-18, 2015-16, 2013-14, 2012-13, and 2003-04.
