Morata believes he’s found true happiness at Atlético Madrid after Chelsea travails

After eighteen, largely unhappy months at Chelsea, Álvaro Morata returned to his boyhood club, Atlético Madrid last January. It may have been just a temporary loan move in name, but it felt like goodbye. Morata certainly wanted it to be goodbye, and did everything in his power to ensure that it was.

Ten days ago, Morata’s wishes came true when Atléti agreed to exercise their €55m buy-option (starting next season, technically, but who’s counting), which, in addition to the various loan fees, means that Chelsea will have recovered almost every million of the transfer fee paid for Morata two years ago.

Morata himself is delighted with his current situation, believing to have found true happiness back home. Considering the good vibes engendered by Chelsea bringing back legends and make a renewed emphasis on homegrown youths, we should certainly be able to relate to that notion.

“Atlético is the best thing that could have happened to me. It would mean much more to me, to win important titles with Atléti, than anything else that I’ve won in the past [with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus]. Because [here] it is different; you rejoice these things in a different way.”
