Derby County bid fond farewell to Chelsea loanee Mason Mount

First-team spot on the horizon?

Chelsea loanee Mason Mount was one of Derby County’s best players this season and one of the keys to their nearly successful Premier League promotion bid that fell just short at the final hurdle.

While they would’ve surely hoped to retain him for next season as well, that was always going to be unlikely. And so, today, they bid fond farewell to him on the official club channels, including this lovely highlights video from Rams TV.

Normally, Mount would be slated for another loan, but this summer’s promising to be anything other than business as usual. Chelsea remain transfer banned and could in fact be looking to seriously integrate the youth talent available from the Academy.

Mount’s case specifically could also be helped by the expected arrival of his head coach at Derby, Frank Lampard, who is reportedly Chelsea’s favourite target to replace Maurizio Sarri.

Mount is currently on international duty with England U21 squad, who are hoping to win the U21 European Championships, which starts this weekend. He was on Chelsea’s Premier League retained list, though that doesn’t really mean anything as far as his future’s concerned. He has two years left with the club, and surely due a new contract before any serious decisions are made.

Will the Chelsea jigsaw fall into place for the 20-year-old? That’s certainly what we’re hoping for!
