LIVE BLOG

90+7min: Wilson hand-ball is the last bit of action. Villa win and are promoted!

90+6min: Mount powers through the middle, and Derby work it around nicely, but Wilson’s cross is too close tot he goalkeeper.

90+5min: Villa with several big headed clearances before Derby stray offside.

90+4min: Derby corner, Mount takes, Abraham heads clear for a throw. Tomori gets on the ball from the throw and plays in a great long ball. Johnson’s header is easy for the goalkeeper however.

90+2min: El Ghazi wastes some time and Wilson goes in the book for complaining about it. But Mount wins the ball off Abraham after the free kick and Waghorn’s on it in a flash. His cross for Jozefzoon is too tall however.

90min: 7 minutes added on. Half-chances for Waghorn and Wilson go begging.

89min: Villa looking comfortable at the moment and even have a free kick in a dangerous position.

84min: Meanwhile, Mings is down for several minutes, in some great pain. Hause on to replace him.

81min: Derby get one back! Tomori picks out Waghorn with a great long ball, Derby keep it alive, cross it in, Bogle cushions a header down for Marriott, who scores! 2-1!

80min: Derby have a corner and create havoc in the area but are unable to smuggle it past the Villa goalkeeper. Bogle eventually sends a long shot wide.

78min: Derby press but Villa counter and only a last-ditch slide from Johnson prevents a great chance. At the other end, Wilson sends one into orbit.

76min: Derby win a corner but Tomori can’t quite get his header on target. Derby keep it alive and Marriott tries a volley on the turn. Just wide!

72min: Mount turns shooter from creator, but gets his side-footed effort all wrong. Villa make their first chance as Green’s on for Adomah. Lawrence off for Jozefzoon in Derby’s final change.

71min: Mount with a fantastic pass to Bogle, who cuts inside the full back and tries to beat the goalkeeper at the near post, but misses just wide.

70min: El Ghazi has a good chance for Villa’s third, but his effort’s straight at Roos, who holds on.

68min: Bennett off for Waghorn as Derby need goals.

60min: Mount down with an injury, but looks okay to carry on. Marriott comes on to replace Huddlestone, who’s not been great, after a few minutes of delay.

59min: Derby goalkeeper Roos makes a giant mess of an easy catch, and the ball goes in off McGinn from a nothing cross. 2-0, ASTON VILLA!

57min: Great play by Tomori this time to win the 1-v-1 with Abraham despite falling down.

56min: Ashley Cole using all 38 years of his experience there to win the free kick off Adomah and provide some respite for Derby.

53min: The feistiness continues as Bogle takes out El Ghazi. Villa have a free kick out wide left, which just misses Mings on the inswing.

51min: Tomori makes a rough challenge and comes off worse, holding his side. But that’s not enough to get him out of the yellow card. More good skills from Tammy on that play.

49min: And now it’s Huddlestone who commits a foul, and tempers flare. The referee tries to calm everyone down.

48min: Hourihan next to go in the book, for stopping Wilson trying to counter.

47min: Bennett gets booked for taking down Abraham from behind. Great skills by Tammy to turn a turnover into a counter.

46min: Derby, with a slightly different shape to their midfield, get the game going again, and hold possession.

HALF-TIME: Derby have it all to do. They started poorly but have gotten better. Villa scored at the perfect time, as they say.

45+1min: And the half-time whistle goes.

43min: Cole steps up and makes a great interception and is fouled, but the referee is unmoved and Villa come forward. Adomah finds the space vacated by Cole, lays it back, and the cross is turned home by El Ghazi, who beats Bogle to the ball. 1-0, ASTON VILLA!

41min: A wide open Keogh heads over from a Derby corner. Annoyed himself for missing that.

37min: Mason Mount tests the goalkeeper but it’s Villa who waste a great opportunity after Tomori loses out to Abraham. But Grealish dallies on the ball instead of playing in Tammy and the play’s eventually whistled (incorrectly) for offside.

35min: Big challenges at both ends now as both teams look to finish the half strongly.

33min: Out of nowhere, Abraham goes close, picking up the ball a bit deeper, turning, and trying to pick up the top corner.

31min: Tomori with a solid play on Abraham this time as Derby continue to improve and grow into the game.

28min: El Ghazi gets the game’s first yellow, pulling back Bogle on the right flank. Wilson swings in the free kick, but it’s way overhit and goes harmlessly everyone’s head.

24min: Bit of a lull in the game as Derby keep kicking it long and Villa keep missing their passes in midfield.

22min: Villa briefly lay siege to the Derby penalty area, but McGinn overhits his cross and Derby get a turn on the ball.

18min: Mount puts himself about but Derby can’t quite turn final third possession into a chance and Villa clear easily.

17min: Villa have another corner. Hourihan swings it in, Johnson half clears. McGinn tries a spectacular volley from 20 yards but he gets it all wrong.

14min: El Ghazi with a storming run off the left flank into the space vacated by Bogle, beating two including Mount, but Keogh clears for a corner. Derby make a bit of a mess of clearing that once again, but eventually do so and counter through Wilson who wins a free kick at half-way.

12min: Mount wins the foul off Grealish, then sticks his tongue out at him. Play nice!

11min: Tomori goes after Abraham with a late sliding challenge. Play nice!

9min: Mount floats in the free kick, Johnson gets the header back across but Tomori’s whistled for dangerous play as he goes for the overhead kick.

8min: Derby win a free kick through Bennett and maybe get a chance to settle down.

7min: Roos with a horrific clearance gifts the ball to Villa. Grealish gets on the ball and unleashes a drive from the top of the D, but it flies well over.

5min: It’s all Villa so far, with Derby dropping back. Villa win a corner after a free kick routine is blocked. Grealish takes and Derby somehow survive as Huddlestone whiffs on his clearance and Tuanzabe gets all crossed up as he tries to find a finish.

KICK-OFF: Derby come out pressing in the 4-4-2 diamond, but Tomori and A.Cole called into early action as Villa set up possession.

The Championship Playoff final is always a massive occasion. There are literally hundreds of millions at stake, after all — £170m in today’s count.

There will be drama.

This season, there’s added and extensive Chelsea interest and involvement. Frank Lampard, future Chelsea manager, is in the Derby County dugout as their head coach. John Terry, future Chelsea manager, is in the Aston Villa dugout as their assistant coach. Loanees Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have been for the former, loanee Tammy Abraham has been key for the latter. Ashley Cole’s also around for good measure.

Should be fun. Here we go!
