The worst news

Chelsea’s game against New England Revolution, dubbed The Final Whistle on Hate, was a major success in raising awareness for the fight against anti-Semitism as well as an estimated $4 million for organisations fighting for the cause but injury to Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with the Europa League final on the horizon, left a sour taste at the end of the game.

There’s plenty of blame to go around for how and why the injury occurred, but at the end of the day, it’s just terrible luck to have this as part of the legacy of an occasion with such a noble cause.

Initial reports disagreed about the severity of the injury, with some more hopeful (just a sprained ankle!) than others. Today, Chelsea confirmed that the injury is indeed devastating, and that the 23-year-old will undergo surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon tonight.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has seen a specialist today (Thursday) and will have surgery on his ruptured Achilles’ tendon this evening.

It’s the same injury that struck down Callum Hudson-Odoi just a few weeks ago. He’s now on his way to recovery, and there appears to be some optimism that he could make a fast recovery and be ready to play early next season.

Depending on the severity of Ruben’s injury, perhaps he, too, can get back full fitness faster than the standard 6-9 months (if not more) expected recovery period.

For now, all we can do is wish for is a fast recovery for Ruben (and Callum as well).
