Another Belgium game, another Eden Hazard goal. What else is new? Following his two-goal performance on Thursday in the 3-1 win over Russia, Hazard set Belgium on their way to a straightforward 2-0 win over Cyprus on Sunday, finding the back of the net inside of 10 minutes in what was his 100th national team appearance.
Not ten minutes later, it was Hazard with the assist as Michy Batshuayi doubled Belgium’s lead — except this time it was brother Thorgan rather than Eden. So just the one goal for the Captain of Belgium, but certainly enough to dispatch Cyprus and make it two wins in two Euro 2020 qualifying games.
It was a slightly tougher task for Germany on Sunday, taking on a resurgent Dutch side who clawed back a 2-0 deficit only to lose 3-2 late on to a Nico Schulz header. Earlier in the game, Antonio Rüdiger collected the assist on Germany’s second goal, providing the David Luiz-esque long ball over the top for Serge Gnabry, who did the rest.
Elsewhere, Croatia slumped to a 2-1 defeat in Hungary, taking an early lead but then letting the home side come back into the game and score a set piece winner 15 minutes from time. Perhaps Croatia should’ve played Mateo Kovačić instead of just letting him sit on the bench the whole time (though we thank them for the rest he thus received).
