Olivier Giroud’s good form continued last night as he found the back of the net for France against Moldova. It was a classicly Giroud-esque goal, a sort of kung fu kick volley on the turn that made enough contact with the cross to divert it past the goalkeeper and into the net.
They all count!
France, the defending World Champions, had already been up 2-0 at that point and would go on to win 4-1 to begin their Euro 2020 qualification campaign in flying style (operative word: flying, if Kylian Mbappé’s hilarious dive in the waning minutes of the match is any indication).
N’Golo Kanté earned rave reviews for his latest performance in the defensive heart of midfield but Giroud’s strike got him a few headlines as well as he moved level with David Trézéguet on the all-time goalscoring charts for Les Bleus with 34. Only Thierry Henry (51) and Michele Platini (41) have scored more. Not bad company.
