David Luiz believes he’s close to signing new Chelsea contract

Here to stay, here to play

The question of David Luiz’s contract extension has been dependent on wages and years, but it would appear that after a couple months of talks, the details have now been ironed out and agreed upon. Presumably, any new deal will still only involve the standard (for players 30 and over) one-year extension, even with the impending transfer ban that’s been imposed on the club by FIFA.

While there’s no official word yet, David Luiz himself sound quite confident that he will be at the club he loves doing what he loves next season as well.

“I think [I’ll be at Chelsea next season]. We are talking with the club. Everybody knows I love this club, I feel comfortable here and am happy here. I am doing my job very well so I think a lot is going to happen.”

“I have the job best job in the world so I have to be motivated every single day. I love football, if I didn’t love football I would not be playing anymore.”

Whether Chelsea’s transfer ban gets upheld for this summer or not, contract extensions for players already under contract will not be affected by the decision.

David Luiz has been one of the cornerstones of Sarri’s team selections, and was given the captain’s armband (from the start of a match) for the first time at Chelsea last week as well when he led the team out against Dynamo Kiev. He’s the longest-serving member of the first-team squad (if we discount the two-year break he took in Paris) and one of the few survivors of the watershed 2012 Champions League moment. He’s a positive, charismatic presence on and off the pitch. He loves the club and we love him. Whether he stay as busy next season as this year remains to be seen (Andreas Christensen seems to be back on track), but it seems like a no-brainer to get him signed for another season.
