The last three goals Manchester United have scored against Chelsea in all competitions have come courtesy of Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, both of whom are set to miss Monday’s FA Cup showdown at the Bridge after picking up injuries in their 2-0 Champions League knockout round (first leg) loss to Paris Saint-Germain this week.
Martial, who grabbed a brace at the Bridge earlier this season in the 2-2 draw and assisted Lingard’s winning goal in United’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford last season, was withdrawn at half-time on Tuesday with a groin problem, just a few minutes after Lingard himself was forced off with a thigh injury. Both players are now expected to miss 2-3 weeks. They were replaced by Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez, respectively, neither of whom impressed greatly despite their great pedigrees.
Then again, nothing went right for United against PSG as they lost for the first time in two months under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, who took over from Jose Mourinho on December 19. Now they look to avenge last year’s FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea, when Eden Hazard’s penalty goal was enough to see off Antonio Conte on a winning note.
As United look to avoid back-to-back defeats for the first time under Solksjaer, Chelsea will be looking for back-to-back wins for just the second time in 2019. Despite our struggle, the Blues do have a strong home record under Sarri, having lost just once all season at the Bridge (1-0 to Leicester City).
