For a fair number of years, Chelsea have followed the self-imposed rule of giving only one-year contract extensions to players over 30 years old. The one time that rule was broken was back in May, for David Luiz. He decided to repay that faith by leaving Chelsea on transfer deadline day two months laters, and joining rivals Arsenal.
Perhaps with Willian, things will be different. Although his current contract ends in June, an ideal future for him involves staying at Chelsea for a few more years.
“I want to stay at the club. My contract ends at the end of the season, [and] I do not know how it will play out, whether I will renew or not. But the desire to stay for a few more years is undoubtedly real. I really want to stay at the club.
“I am well adapted, I like everyone, I feel the affection from the supporters, from the people who work at the club. I also really like the city. I do not have any reasons to leave. I will only leave if the club do not want me to stay.”
Speaking of David Luiz, we have yet to face our former cult hero and his new team this season. It is an encounter everyone is looking forward to, including Willian who will have no qualms about destroying his ‘brother’ in front of millions of people.
“I have faced [David Luiz] a few times, he for Chelsea, me for Shakthar, [then] me for Chelsea, he for PSG. Now he is at Arsenal.
“He is a brother I have since I am eight years old, when we first met. But on the pitch... there is no way out. If I have to nutmeg him, I will!”

That is the least we can hope for!
