Ethan Ampadu’s quest for minutes at RB Leipzig has taken a literal and proverbial hit, after the 19-year-old Chelsea loanee was diagnosed with a concussion following Wales’ match against Croatia over the weekend. RB Leipzig confirmed the unfortunate yesterday morning.
Ampadu had picked up the injury just a few minutes into the second-half of Sunday’s Euro 2020 qualifier, in a collision with Croatia forward Bruno Petković — in a game that also saw Mateo Kovačić go down with an impact injury. Petković was carded for the challenge that knocked Ampadu to the ground, where he received treatment for a minute before getting replaced by Joe Morrell.
Concussions are unfortunately one of the least understood (or acknowledged) yet potentially most worrying injuries in any sport, so hopefully Ampadu takes his time to make sure that he’s not only okay but is in good enough condition to resume playing and contact.
He’s not had much luck at all (or any minutes, for that matter) so far in his loan at the Bundesliga side, but his health must come first.
