- Lucas Moura SAVED; David Luiz SCORES (2-4)!!!!!
FULL-TIME: Penalties.
90+4min: Giroud misses another one as he holds up the ball and finds Emerson, who blasts past his defender. He lays in a cross for the big man, but he misses wide of the far post.
90+1min: Giroud swings and misses with the goal at his mercy from an Emerson cross. Willian’s follow-up is blocked, and his speculative effort afterwards flies well over.
89min: Emerson nicks in and floats in a cross, but there’s Alderweireld again to clear ahead of Giroud. Spurs then waste a bit of time.
86min: Tremendous tackle from Alderweireld prevents Giroud from creating a shot for himself.
85min: After a few shaky moments, Chelsea come forward and win a corner. Hazard takes, but Azpilicueta is called for a foul in the area and Spurs clear.
82min: Lamela elbows Azpilicueta in the face. At least we got a free kick out of it.
80min: Kovacic on for Barkley in a second standard move from Sarri.
78min: Sissoko picks up an injury in a clash with is own teammate. Davinson Sanchez comes on to replace him as Spurs complain about Chelsea being allowed to play on while Sissoko was down.
75min: Giroud unable to turn the ball goalward from an awkward angle. Seen him score tougher ones before. Willian comes on for Pedro, who ironically shakes Atkinson’s hand.
73min: Spurs finally pick up a booking as Sissoko goes in studs first in a challenge with Jorginho at midfield. From the free kick, Chelsea find Hazard who takes aim from 20 yards and misses by an inch.
71min: Giroud picks up an impact injury after getting his legs taken out from underneath him on an aerial duel. Seems okay to carry on.
69min: Somehow, Gazzaniga is allowed to launch a route one attack with a goal kick as Rudiger falls asleep. Lucas hits his shot wide fortunately.
68min: Spurs take off Llorente for Lucas Moura. A rather different proposition at center forward now.
66min: Hazard dances through various kicks and fouls but can’t get his shot away and Giroud’s effort is blocked. Easily could’ve had a penalty there, instead Azpilicueta gets a yellow as Rose cons the referee once again.
65min: Hazard finds Pedro, whose cross is blocked by an arm. Pedro protests, Atkinson is unmoved, VAR is silent.
63min: Rudiger has a half-chance on a turn and volley from a corner. At the other end, Jorginho misses his header and Llorente has all the time to score but loses composure and hits it well wide.
60min: Emerson drives forward and is taken out by Sissoko’s dangling leg. No call from Atkinson, whose refereeing is approaching ridiculous levels of inconsistency and incompetence.
58min: Hazard hits his shot just wide after Barkley, Jorginho, and Kante combine to win the ball in midfield. Looked certain to score... At the other end, Lamela is just called offside with a third of the pitch to run into.
55min: Weird incident where Kante gets an arm across the face from Rose, the referee blows for a foul, but Kante apparently doesn’t hear it and carries on, getting into a clash with Rose on a 50-50 ball. Rose plays up the contact and Kante’s booked.
53min: Jorginho mistimes his challenge on Rose and gets a yellow. Hilarious decision given all the fouls that were let go. Sarri points this out to Atkinson, and gets a yellow himself.
52min: Chelsea almost respond straight away, but Giroud mis-hits his shot when 1-v-1 with Gazzaniga and he saves at his near post.
50min: Goal, Llorente. Danny Rose is wide open again on the left and he swings in a cross. Llorente beats both David Luiz and Rudiger for the header and it’s 2-1 on the night, 2-2 on aggregate.
48min: Spurs have a meaningful attack for the first time in the game, having switched to three at the back at half-time, but Chelsea hold strong as Alderweireld eventually volleys one well over.
46min: Chelsea pick up where they left off as Emerson drives forward and wins a corner. Gazzaniga punches clear, but only as far as Jorginho at the top of the box. His shot however is straight back at the goalkeeper and he gathers.
HALF-TIME: Great first 45 from the Blues, who now lead 2-1 on aggregate. One more half to go!
45+3min: Another chance goes begging as Barkley finds Pedro, but he can’t work a shot. His layoff does find Kante, but he gets his shot all wrong this time.
45+2min: Alderweireld loses the ball and Hazard is in, but he’s tackled from behind and the chance is gone. VAR is silent so that was a good tackle? Looked like a penalty from the angle... and on replay, it looks quite clearly like a foul, outside the box and continues into the area. LOL.
44min: Great playing out from the back by Chelsea as Hazard drops deep, and the break is on, but Kante’s cross is cut out by Winks with Pedro waiting to put it home.
43min: Hazard drives forward and finds Pedro, but his touch is heavy and Spurs clear.
42min: Winks clatters Azpilicueta as Spurs try to respond. Then they yell at each other
38min: GOAL!!!!! HAZARD!!!!! Dier commits his fourth foul, but Chelsea get on with it quickly. Pedro finds Azpilicueta, he crosses well and Hazard pokes it home. 2-0 CHELSEA, 2-1 on aggregate!
36min: Barkely finds Hazard and he trounces Sissoko. The low cross finds Giroud, who somehow manages to stub his feet instead of putting the ball into the back of the net.
33min: Danny Rose replaces the hobbling Vertonghen.
31min: Chelsea keeping up the pressure, winning a corner and a couple throws, then Hazard is taken out by Aurier. Still no card, but Vertonghen looks to have picked up an injury for Spurs.
27min: GOAL!!!! KANTE!!!! Hazard wins another and this time he just pumps it into the area. Spurs half-clear to the edge of the box, where Kante has all the time to hit a low, hard shot towards goal and it goes through at least two sets of legs and into the back of the net!!! 1-0, CHELSEA and 1-1 on aggregate!!!
25min: Azpi wins a corner after a great crossfield switch from David Luiz. Hazard takes, and goes short, eventually working a cross for Azpilicueta. But Rudiger strays offside and the chance is gone.
23min: Emerson wins the ball and Hazard starts the attack, but Rudiger’s long ball forward for Giroud is too hard and Spurs have it back.
22min: Chelsea unable to clear their lines and Spurs keep the pressure on, forcing a second corner. Lamela takes and Barkley clears.
20min: Two poor passes in a row from Barkley keep Spurs on the ball and they eventually come forward. Azpi blocks a Davies cross for a corner.
18min: Rudiger’s pass forward is poor and Spurs try to break, but he’s there to mop and force Llorente to turn back. Spurs keep possession as Chelsea press high.
17min: Dier commits his third foul, this time bringing down Kante.
14min: Chelsea try an actual free kick routine, but efforts from Giroud, Barkley, and Rudiger are all very poor and Spurs eventually have a goal kick.
13min: Alderweireld’s turn to commit a foul, taking out Hazard 1-v-1. Atkinson keeping the cards in his pocket.
12min: Hazard takes the free kick but Rudiger’s called for a moving screen and Spurs play out.
10min: David Luiz stays down for a couple minutes in clear pain, but is trying to carry on. Ampadu out for a jog. Dier then fouls Jorginho, avoids yellow again.
7min: Barkley’s cross is blocked and Spurs launch a counter, but David Luiz is there to cut it out before feeling a boot from Dier.
4min: Jorginho finds Pedro with a great ball and bears down on goal 1-v-1. He cuts inside, but his shot is blocked by Alderweireld with Gazzaniga beaten.
3min: After a brief foray forward from David Luiz, it’s been Spurs maintaining possession at the back.
1min: Spurs get us underway, but Chelsea win it quickly and look to build.
Chelsea need to overcome a 1-0 deficit if we are to avoid falling at the semifinal stage for the second year running in this competition. To do that, we need to beat Spurs, which we’ve failed to do in three straight tries. To do that, we need to score some goals, which we’ve failed to do in three of the last five games.
The task is clear.
