Mason Mount scored five goals in his final three games for Vitesse Arnhem, all of them playoff matches to qualify for the Europa League. We all waited with bated breath to see what would be his next step.
Chelsea legend and Mason’s idol Frank Lampard won the competition, as Mount joined Derby County. He made his (preseason) debut last weekend; this weekend, he got the start against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Derby’s preseason finale.
Unsurprisingly, Mount picked up right where he left off — he scored again. The winning goal, too, as Derby beat the recently promoted Wolves 2-1.
Afterwards, Lampard had trouble containing his excitement about Mount’s game and attitude.
In fact, when you get to about the 1:10-mark of the video above, you’ll hear Lampard use a rather familiar and famous phrase.
“He is going to go to the top, and I hate to say, to put pressure on him, but I’ve got so much belief in his quality, and this is the difference with a midfield player who ends up in the six-yard box. Too many midfield players don’t want to go that extra yard, he does, and then things like that happen and he finishes it.
“But again, not just that. I keep coming back to work rate. His work in midfield, getting up and down.... putting under pressure, not letting Wolves players, who’ve got great quality, not letting them rest on the ball.
“So it all starts from that and then he’s got the extra bit to go and score goals.”

Right to the very top! Harry Redknapp once said that of Lampard; now Super Frank is passing the torch.
It may have been just a preseason match, but it’s hard not to get (extra) excited about Mount’s prospect this season and beyond.
