We have reached the final round of group games in the 2018 World Cup and has been the case since 1982 and “The Disgrace of Gijón” where West Germany and Austria colluded to eliminate Algeria and ensure that they both advanced, the final games in each group are played at the same time. It’s a bit like the Premier League’s final Sunday, but on a much smaller scale.
(In a quirk of Russia’s geographical scale and weird time zones, the two games won’t actually kick off at the same “local time”, with a 5pm Moscow Time and a 6pm Samara Time kick-off all translating to events happening at the same time.)
In Group A however that arrangement won’t matter too much. Both Russia and Uruguay have already advanced, having won both of their previous games. They face each other to determine who finishes first or second, which will determine who they face in the next round. The winner of the group gets the runners-up of Group B, while second place gets the winners of Group B. Group B is in a bit of a flux, but those two advancing teams are likely to be Spain and Portugal, in some combination that won’t be known until later that night.
So basically, Group A have nothing to play for.
Here’s how to watch.
