90min: 5 more minutes for Iceland to hang on to an historic result.

87min: Pavon comes close, but Iceland goalkeeper makes another excellent save.

84min: Higuain arrives onto the scene. Meza makes way. Earlier, Cristian Pavon came on as well (for Di Maria).

81min: Iceland in scramble mode but Messi picks up the ball and curls one inches wide.

78min: Iceland survive what looked like much more of a penalty shout than the one that was actually given. No VAR?

74min: Argentina continue to press forward, looking for the winner.

63min: Argentina gifted a penalty as Aguero falls over a leg. Harsh. But Messi’s effort is saved! Ball don’t lie.

59min: Iceland turning shot-blocking into an art form as the fans launch into yet another Viking chant. Argentina fans turn up the noise in response. A much more even contest in the stands than on the pitch, though it remains 1-1.

54min: Argentina make an attacking change, Banega on for Biglia.

46min: No changes as second half gets under way.

45+1min: HALF

45min: Iceland almost score a second, but Caballero makes a big save.

40min: And so it continues. Iceland dropping 10 behind the ball and challenging Argentina to break them down. Two half-hearted VAR shouts aside, the plan’s working.

30min: Pattern of play resumes, with Argentina dominating possesion 73-27 and Iceland looking to take advantage of counters and turnovers.

23min: Iceland back on level terms as Argentina fail to clear their lines. Caballero makes a couple saves, but Finnbogason’s there to apply the finish. 1-1!

19min: Aguero finds the breakthrough with a rather emphatic finish. First ever goal at the World Cup for Sergio.

17min: Messi works a shot, parried.

15min: The tackles are flying in left and right as Iceland are putting up a solid fight.

9min: Argentina give the ball away trying to play out from the back and Bjarnason misses the empty net. Massive chance for Iceland.

8min: Messi repeats his free kick from the other side. Also bounces just wide.

4min: Messi free kick — after a brief pause to switch the ball for one with more air in it — flashes across the front of goal, no one can get a touch.

KICK-OFF: And here we go. Iceland drop into shape and let Argentina’s possession begin.
