As the summer days tick away and Chelsea remain largely inactive, anxiety levels are steadily rising. There’s no clarity regarding the manager, the future of the team’s biggest stars, transfers in or out, or even the preseason schedule. But hey, at least we know who the shirt-sleeve sponsor will be!
In fairness, we actually knew this a month ago already when the Times reported it, but Chelsea and Hyundai Motor confirmed it only this morning. Hyundai Motor Group, the fourth largest car-manufacturer in the world (moving on up!) is the automotive arm of the South Korean conglomerate Hyundai. The 4-year deal replaces Yokohoma sub-brand Alliance Tyres on the left sleeve — but only in domestic competitions. No official value has been announced, but the Times expected it to be worth upwards of £10m, which would double the previous record high sleeve sponsor deal (Manchester City and Nexen Tire).
Per the official announcement, Chelsea and Hyundai will work collaboratively “to develop a range of initiatives and benefits for supporters”. What these benefits exactly entail is anyone’s guess, but they do mention “car displays at the club”, which hopefully will mean a return to parked cars behind the goal, 90s style.
For now, we just have a funny video starring David Luiz, Olivier Giroud, and Tiemoue Bakayoko. So we’ve got that going for us, which is nice.
The new sponsor will be first seen Down Under when Chelsea travel to play Perth Glory on 23 July in a brand new stadium.
