Today, we mourn the loss of Ray Wilkins, someone who grew into a household name at Chelsea Football Club. Wilkins was hospitalised late last week following a sudden heart attack and succumbed to it this afternoon.

Ray came through the ranks at Chelsea, captaining the side for four years beginning at the age of 18 and leading them back to the First Division in 1976-77. He went on to sign for Manchester United following the Blues’ subsequent relegation two seasons later, and had an illustrious playing career at the likes of AC Milan, PSG and Rangers whilst also gathering 84 caps for England.
A spell as assistant manager back at his boyhood club from 1998 to 2000 preceded his most recent tenure in the same position under first-team managers Luiz Felipe Scolari and Carlo Ancelotti. Wilkins was well-loved by those associated with the club and received great praise from Ancelotti for his part in the club’s flourishing years under the pair. He was also an important figure to the youngsters coming through the academy, many of whom have joined in the pouring tributes on social media.
Rest in peace, Ray. Gone too soon but never forgotten.
Really sad news about my former coach Ray Wilkins. At the tender age of 15 he put his arm around me and helped me during my transition with the first team. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time. Rest In Peace Ray.
