As the video posted by HLN journalist Kristof Terreur confirms, Eden Hazard was unable to attend last night’s Golden Shoes awards ceremony in Belgium, wherein he was announced as the winner (for the first time ever!) of the Best Belgian Footballer Abroad award. So he was instead presented with it at Stamford Bridge by teammate Thibaut Courtois (who finished fifth in the vote) and a young fan named Antoine. (No, not Antonio.)
The story goes that Hazard was lured to the Bridge, and away from commercial commitments with Nike (who were celebrating in style the 20th anniversary of the Mercurial boot), to do a meet & greet, so the video starts with him answering a few easy and silly questions, including his favorite hamburger sauce (andalouse, whatever that is) and whether he’s faster or bigger than Thibaut, etc.
Then comes the reveal, with Courtois handing over the award and small bottle of Hazard’s favorite champagne. Hazard says a few words, including his usual mantra of “in football, trophies are important as a team, not as an individual”.
Never leave us, Eden!
(Terreur also confirms that, as Courtois said earlier this week, contract talks between him and Chelsea are scheduled for this month. Eden should be following soon after, though there is no formal offer yet.)
