LIVE BLOG

FULL TIME: Chelsea win!

90+3min: Half-chances from Zaha and Townsend aside, no problem seeing this out. Chelsea counter and Morata is 1-v-1 with Hennessy, but he goes for the chip instead of taking the ball around him and the goalkeeper saves. No hat-trick today.

90min: 3 minutes added on.

88min: Morata comes to within inches of an opportunity at the hat-trick but Milivojević’s sliding tackle is enough to deflect the ball away from his path.

86min: Milivojević finally goes into the book after he brings down Kovačić.

84min: Both sides seem resigned to the outcome, which suits us just fine.

80min: Jorginho the surprise third sub for Sarri. Fàbregas comes on.

78min: Kovačić maintains possession with a lovely bit of skill and almost finds Morata with a through ball.

77min: Van Aanholt has a go with his weaker foot, but it’s high and wide.

75min: Zaha twists and turns but Chelsea crowd him out. Palace look down and out, but the next goal could yet be interesting...

70min: GOOOOOALL!!!! It’s Pedro’s turn to finish sweetly, as Chelsea play through Palace on the left flank. Alonso’s cross finds Pedro making the second run, and he makes no mistake. 3-1, CHELSEA!

65min: GOOOOOALL!!!! Hazard takes a free kick, finds Morata on the far post, and he takes a touch and finishes with a stellar left-footed effort. 2-1, CHELSEA!

64min: Hazard and Hazard-lookalike Kovačić replace Willian and Barkley.

63min: A Willian free kick finds David Luiz right on the penalty spot, but his header is at savable height and Hennessy palms it out for a corner. Willian takes, and this time David Luiz’s header isn’t close.

60min: Willian’s hopeful long shot is saved easily. Palace come forward through Zaha and Rüdiger’s in trouble, but David Luiz’s cuts out the low fizzed cross.

56min: Azpilicueta picks out Morata in the middle, but he’s offside. His header was saved anyway. Milivojević avoids yet another yellow for a dangerous, scything challenge, which fortunately did not make contact with Pedro.

53min: Palace equalize. Morata tries to turn Tomkins, but it doesn’t come off. Instead, Palace play a bit of vertical tiki-taka of their own around Jorginho and David Luiz, and Townsend finishes with uncharacteristic aplomb. 1-1.

51min: Milivojević avoids a booking for hacking down Pedro.

49min: Chelsea move break down on the left as Willian and Alonso continue to not be on the same page. Then Kanté comes forward but doesn’t quite know what to do. Finds Pedro eventually, but his cross is cut out. Zaha then wins a free kick to get Palace a breather. Hazard then pops up on the warm-up area and gets a nice applause from the crowd.

46min: Palace get us back underway after a brief delay with the linesman’s microphone. No changes for either side. Palace try the typical Chelsea pass up the left wing and win a throw-in; Azpilicueta mops up.

HALF-TIME: Chelsea dominating possession but posing little threat overall. Palace looking to counter through Zaha or Townsend. It’s made for a bit of a low-key affair in a muted atmosphere. Some improvement would not be unwelcome.

45+1min: Half-time.

45min: A bit of midfield back-n-forth as we await the half-time whistle.

41min: Chelsea maintain possession before Barkley’s dispossessed, but Chelsea win it back and resume the passing around. Not much incisiveness to it at the moment however, even as David Luiz ends up on the left wing to cross into the arms of the goalkeeper.

38min: Rüdiger finds Alonso with a long switch; he wins a free kick off McArthur. Chelsea maintain possession, and it feels like a second goal right now could kill the game already.

36min: Great press from Kanté and others wins the ball back and he finds Morata in great position. His layoff goes to Barkley, but his left-footed shot is high, wide, and not so handsome.

35min: Willian scores, but he’s offside, just barely, on Pedro’s initial shot. Chelsea looking much more lively since the goal.

32min: GOOOOOOOAL!!! A long-range attempt from Willian is blocked, but Chelsea retain possession and work the ball back into the area. Pedro has two bites at the cross, the second-time he finds Morata 5 yards out, who touches, turns, and scores! 1-0, CHELSEA!

30min: Willian and Pedro play short before a low cross is cleared at the near post for a second try. That one’s cleared and they try the counter through Zaha again, but Kanté and Pedro are tracking him and the latter nicks the ball back.

29min: Chelsea keep up the pressure but Alonso’s cross is too strong this time and it goes out for a throw, from which an excellent high press from Morata earns Chelsea a corner.

27min: Azpilicueta’s turn to cross and Palace clear with some difficulty. Kepa cuts out the attempt to counter and Chelsea resume the attack.

25min: A beautiful cross from Alonso is headed clear just ahead of Morata. Zaha counters and has David Luiz 1-v-1, but Alonso and Barkley are back to provide support and Chelsea resume possession.

24min: Possession without much cut or thrust ends with another errant attempted pass out wide to Azpilicueta.

21min: David Luiz blocks well as Zaha and Meyer interplay in the left channel leaves the latter with a shooting opportunity. Palace’s turn to have a bit of possession before Alonso wins a foul off of McArthur.

20min: Zaha bounds forward and picks out Max Meyer at the top of the area, but his 20-yard shot is well high.

19min: Another errant pass out wide right goes astray. Sarri’s looking increasingly agitated on the bench and Chelsea’s lack of quality.

18min: Rüdiger finds Morata over the top, but he’s offside.

16min: Chelsea’s latest spell (vs. 11-men behind the ball) has a moment when Alonso is found in the penalty area, but he’s crowded out and Palace try to counter through Zaha. He’s eventually fouled in the center of the pitch.

14min: Barkley’s square pass at the top of the area is intercepted by Van Aanholt and he sprints forward. He outruns everyone but his cross is cleared by David Luiz.

12min: Willian cuts inside from the left and almost threads a ball through to Alonso, but a sliding tackle clears. Palace try to counter but Chelsea recover well.

10min: A spell of possession for a minute or two, but it’s all a bit aimless. David Luiz tries a long switch for Azpilicueta making the run up the right wing, but the pass is wayward and it all ends in a goal kick, frustratingly.

8min: Barkley mis-hits a cross low, and it deflects off Tomkins, but the goalkeeper is there to save. A few seconds later, Barkley tries another cross, this time hit better, but no one’s in the center to tap it home.

6min: Barkley gives the ball away in midfield and Townsend comes forward, but Chelsea recover well and crowd him and Zaha out. After a brief spell of possession, a David Luiz long ball over the top is just missed by Pedro, who goes for a tough first-time crossing technique instead of just controlling it.

3min: Zaha twists and turns a million times and wins a corner, but Chelsea deal with that as well.
