Rüdiger reflects on ‘difficult weeks’ full of ‘lots of mistakes’ at Chelsea

Chelsea may have kept six clean sheets in our last seven games in all competitions, but with goals in inconsistent supply, four of those six clean sheets have come in 0-0 draws. That’s certainly not something to get too excited about, even if your primary job involves keeping said clean sheets.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois focused on the ways Chelsea (and Chelsea fans!) can improve in his post-match interview with Chelsea TV; now here’s Antonio Rüdiger, who played every single minute of the six clean sheets (and, perhaps notably, did not play in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the middle of that streak) talking along similar lines.

“Honestly, I prefer that we win this game and concede a goal, at least we would have the three points. Of course we are disappointed with the performance and I think we are lucky that Leicester did not score in the first half.

“We cannot be happy with the last few weeks. It is difficult weeks for everyone and there are lots of mistakes that we are doing.”

With Rüdiger referencing Leicester’s profligacy in front of goal, it sounds like he’s talking about mistakes both in defence as well as elsewhere on the pitch. Clearly, Chelsea are in need of shaping up, though the 24-year-old doesn’t think we’re more than a little tweak or perhaps even a lucky bounce away from that.

“It is like this sometimes. You just need that one moment. At the moment it is difficult but we have to go for it.”

Chelsea’s schedule remains suitably busy, with focus switching constantly between the cups and the league. With Cahill’s recent injury, Rüdiger will likely be counted on even more in the upcoming weeks. Fortunately, he’s settled quickly after his summer transfer from Roma and has already become a reliable part of the defensive corps.
