Chelsea open contract talks with Charly Musonda Jr — report

Following his long-awaited and suitably scintillating full debut against Nottingham Forest last week, Charly Musonda Jr's Chelsea career looks to be back on the right track. Adding further weight to that notion is yesterday’s report in the Evening Standard, which claims that Chelsea have opened contract extension talks with the 20-year-old wonderkid.

Charly’s current contract, signed in 2015, is set to run out in June 2019, so the timing is just right, especially in light of the recent trend of Chelsea youngsters being less willing to sign extensions than before (see: Solanke, Chalobah, etc.) — a trend that’s understandable from their perspective but probably a bit frustrating from Chelsea’s perspective. Musonda himself has apparently postponed negotiations once already to see what his squad status this season might be.

Despite a few minor injuries this summer, Musonda has three appearances already this season, including the one start in the League Cup. Hopefully that trend continues and he will commit his long-term future to the club as well.
