Chelsea confirm squad numbers for deadline day signings Drinkwater and Zappacosta

New, comments

Transfer Deadline Day is over and now we get to start surveying the damage. But first, some final bits of business to take care of, namely the assignment of two new squad numbers for the two new signings at Chelsea. It was going to be three, but then Ross Barkley got cold feet. So it’s only the two.

Two is better than none, right? We’ll have plenty of time to pick over this.

For now, here’s the word from Chelsea regarding the new numbers: Danny Drinkwater takes shirt no.6; Davide Zappacosta takes shirt no.21. Welcome, dudes!

The no.6 shirt has seen better days than the last few seasons when it’s belonged to the likes of Oriol Romeu, Baba Rahman, and Nathan Aké. Hopefully Drinkwater goes on to make a bigger impact than that trio, perhaps more along the lines of legends like Ricardo Carvalho and Marcel Desailly, the two reasons I try to always play in the no.6 shirt if and when I have choice in rec-league. Drinkwater wore no.4 with Leicester but he obviously wasn’t going to get Fàbregas’s number Chelsea.

The no.21 shirt just recently became available when Nemanja Matić moved to Manchester United. Before his (second arrival), the number was mostly associated with Salomon Kalou. Zappacosta wore the no.7 shirt at Torino, but that number belongs to Kanté at Chelsea.
