Chelsea defender undergoes third loan spell in Turkey

Kenneth Omeruo has signed a new 3-year deal at Chelsea and will spend the season on loan at Kasimpasa, where he also spent the 2015-16 season.

This will be Omeruo’s fifth season on loan, after previously spending time at ADO Den Haag, Middlesbrough and Alanyaspor. Omeruo was largely expected to get a look-in with the Chelsea first team after the 2014 World Cup, in which he impressed against quality opposition such as the likes of Argentina but three years on, it could be said that he’s plateaued, or even regressed.

He shone at times in Boro colours but was very inconsistent, and arguably took a step sideways at best when he made a loan switch to Kasimpasa, and then Alanyaspor. His level is comfortably above that of a lower-mid table Turkish side, and Besiktas wanted to buy him last summer but a fee could not be agreed with Chelsea. It’s a tad disappointing to see him set to spend a third consecutive season playing at the same level but if nothing else, he’ll see plenty of minutes on the pitch. Hopefully, along the way he’ll also impress a suitor willing to pay up for him next summer.
