Matt Miazga opened his international goalscoring account on Saturday night in dramatic and clutch fashion. The Chelsea center back, who spent last season out on loan, notched his first goal for the United States as time was winding down against Nicaragua. A diving header at the far post gave the Americans a 3-0 win, but more importantly it gave them the tiebreaker advantage that let them finish atop their group at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This was just Miazga’s third ever cap for his country and his first in over a year. After signing with Chelsea in the winter of 2016, he got a couple of chances to dip his toes into the Premier League waters late in the season. During the most recent campaign he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Vitesse where he appeared 23 times and helped the club win their first ever trophy in the form of the Dutch Cup.
It seems unlikely that the American is close to challenging for minutes at Stamford Bridge, but moments like this may help him get noticed by other clubs who are looking to bring in defensive help this coming season.
