Chelsea legend Mikel John Obi back in England for surgery on abdominal injury

According to various reports over the past day or so, Chelsea legend Mikel John Obi had travelled back to England — Chelsea specifically, as per most of those reports — to seek at least a second opinion on a bothersome abdominal injury that had kept him out for a better part of the last month for his new club Tianjin Teda of the Chinese Super League.

Mikel had started and played all 270 minutes of Tianjin’s first three games of the new season, and even scored a goal, but he has not made an appearance since April 2nd.

It’s unclear just how much Chelsea are or were involved, but it appears that Mikel has opted for surgery to clear up the problem. In fact, the surgery is now done, as he confirmed on his Instagram account a couple hours ago.

Chelsea are always ready and willing to help our own, and with at least a monthlong rehab awaiting Mikel — he might be available for Nigeria’s CAN qualifier against South Africa in June — the club will no doubt make Cobham available for his use if he so chooses.

Good luck and get well soon, Mikel John Obi!
