A fairly familiar script is unfolding at Stamford Bridge today, and unfortunately that means it's been anything but comfortable so far. Chelsea started well, very well in fact, grabbing the early goal through Hazard and good work from Costa and Fabregas — the three subs from Saturday combining as effectively as we know they can.
Since then however, Southampton have more than grown into the game and Chelsea have at time struggled to get any sort of foothold in the proceedings. That said, Saints equalizer came from a rather stupid passage of play, where Moses was called for a foul on Bertrand (instead of the other way around as it should've been) and Davis's shot was deflected for a corner that Chelsea made a right mess of and Romeu was on hand to tap home a rebound.
The last ten minutes of the half has been rather ragged and end-to-end, with both sides spurning good chances to take the lead. Chelsea's defending on set pieces has been terrible, and we've looked rather unorganized in open play as well. Must play better.
And then, to make us feel a bit better, Saints made a right mess of things on one of our corners, and ENGLAND'S BRAVE GARY CAHILL popped up to head us back into the lead with the final touch of the first half. Attaboy, EBGC! (And that's despite Costa almost taking his head off with an attempted bicycle kick at the same time.)
