Frank Lampard played the last of 648 games for Chelsea almost three years ago now, but Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer and arguably greatest ever player, never got a proper chance to say goodbye to the fans back then. “For whatever reason”, is how he puts it and let’s jut leave it at that.
Now that he’s retired and taking steps towards the next phase of his career by studying for his coaching badges (with Chelsea’s help!), Lampard has been a regular sight around the club and was the special guest of honor for Saturday’s match against Swansea City. At half-time, he got his chance to the proper goodbye, which he kept short and emotional.
“I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye properly last time, and I always regretted that. I want to thank all of you. All my special memories of this place — and I’m thinking of them right now — I couldn’t have done it without you. We couldn’t have done that without you.”

Club captain John Terry paid tribute to his good friend in the matchday programme, which had a special commemorative cover to mark the occasion as well.
“For me he is the best to ever play for this club and getting to see first-hand the work he put in day in, day out, at the training ground and in games, was an absolute pleasure. I wish you all the best for your next steps in life and football. A proper Chelsea legend. Love ya, Lamps.”
