The long-awaited Thibaut Courtois contract extension appears to be inching closer to reality, with Kristof Terreur, who’s generally very good with news about Chelsea’s Belgian players, reporting this morning that the goalkeeper is in “advanced negotiations” with the club over the new contract. This matches previous reports from the Telegraph, which claimed that Chelsea finally gave in to Courtois’ wage demands to make him the joint-highest paid goalkeeper in the league (and thus, the world), with potential bonuses pushing his total earnings to the top of the charts.
If Real Madrid want to sign Thibaut Courtois they will have to be very quick: Chelsea and their goalkeeper are in advanced negotiations over a new 5y deal. #cfc pic.twitter.com/wPlzr7CASQ

With just 18 months left on Courtois’ current contract (not to mention the never-ending back-to-Spain rumors), there’s not much time to waste in getting the extension done. Courtois has been looking for a healthy improvement on his current deal, which he signed back in 2014 after returning from three years away on loan at Atletico Madrid. If he’s granted his £200k per week wish, he will just about double his money and get paid commensurate with David De Gea, the other best goalkeeper in the Premier League.
It’s probably worth it, especially with transfer fees spiraling out of control. I’d much rather see players get paid rather than agents and clubs.
Do it.
