For the second month running, a Chelsea player’s goal has been nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month. But while Marcos Alonso did not win for his free-kick against Spurs — the award deservedly went to Charlie Daniels — Álvaro Morata possibly has a better chance this month, though he’s up against strong competition including Kevin De Bruyne’s winner last weekend for Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
If you need a reminder of Morata’s goal and just how special it was in terms of the pace, strength, and technique required, here’s Thierry Henry to overanalyze it in exquisite, adoring, somewhat scarily obsessive detail.
I guess we know who Thierry’s voting for!
Here are the rest of the nominees, presented by Carling who are the sponsors of this award. The nominees include, in order, Andrew Surman (Ibe backheel bonus), Antonio Valencia (BOOM), Morata (the one you should vote for because this is a popularity contest above all), Leroy Sane (bit of luck there on the first flick), Fabian Delph (meh), Philippe Coutinho (meh), Harry Kane (meh), and KDB (boo).
