Chelsea bolstered the squad with the acquisitions of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso this summer, but plans are already being made for further reinforcements next summer.

According to agent Karlheinz Forster, part of those plans is his client Niklas Süle. Chelsea apparently had some interest in the young Hoffenheim defender this summer, too, but he rejected our advances.

"Yes, there was interest [from Chelsea]. The English have made it clear that their interest will remain valid next year."

The 21-year-old centre back and silver medalist at the Olympics this year with the German U23 national team made his professional debut at age 18. He’s since become a fixture in the Hoffenheim back line and even made his senior international debut recently.

It won't be an easy task for Chelsea to convince Hoffenheim to let go of one of their best prospects though, as sporting director Hansi Flick believes that Süle should stay in the Bundesliga for at least another two seasons.

"I think it is good that he is committed to Hoffenheim. He can also continue to develop, can mature more when he spends another one, two years. At 23 or 24, he can still take the next step, He has in Forster a consultant who can assess that."

While Chelsea do have quality young defenders in the pipeline already, keeping tabs on Süle (or any other young prospect) should serve as good insurance policy in case the Christensen situation goes awry, or if Zouma’s recovery does not go as planned, or if the likes of Tomori and Clarke-Salter don’t develop as expected.
