David Luiz’s long memory is one Chelsea fan’s huge gain

A gift five years in the making

After Chelsea’s dramatic and emotional 4-2 victory over Leicester City in extra time on Tuesday, David Luiz seeked out one particular traveling Chelsea supporter and handed him his shirt. While it’s not abnormal for a player to give away his shirt after a match, there was a specific reason for this particular show of gratitude.

The Chelsea defender, in his second term at the club, explained the significance of the gesture on his Instagram account:

It turns out that the recipient of a match-worn David Luiz shirt was someone he recognized from five years ago in his previous stint at Chelsea. Someone who was always a huge fan and always wished him well. Now, grown up, he’s still there being consistently supportive.

“He always was so respectful with me and many times he just want to say 'congrats for the game and good night'.”

“So last week after the game against Liverpool I was totally in shock, when I arrived at the hotel. I saw one guy running screaming my name and telling me to wait, and when I saw the ex little boy, now so big, making the same action just to say to me, 'we support you and the team, good night David!'

“So, in Leicester the beautiful action was not my action to give him the shirt , the beautiful action was from him , to be there supporting us like always!”

David Luiz is the best.
