There are few things more powerful in the world than a phone call from Jose Mourinho. Kurt Zouma and Cesc Fàbregas could certainly attest to it, and they’re hardly alone. While last season’s struggles may have taken some of the shine off of it, it’s undoubtedly still a weapon of fearsome power, and when combined with the lustre and spending power of a Manchester United, it’s basically unstoppable. It can even move the Eiffel Tower Paul Pogba!
There is, however, one man. He’s not a very big man. Not at first sight anyway. One man who has stared the Mourinho Phone Call in its face and has lived to tell the tale. Tell me of your homeworld, N’Golo.
“It was amazing to have Mourinho call me, even though I'd been warned before how he would appeal to me. I listened to his arguments about why I should move to United.”
“But at that time I was hesitant between staying at Leicester or leaving for Chelsea. My discussions with them were already well underway. But when I spoke, I had a good feeling with Conte."
-N’Golo Kanté; source: Sky
We had already known that Conte was a huge reason behind Kante leaving the champions (and Champions League football) for the promise of a mid-table club looking to rediscover the glories of a non-forgotten recent past. But knowing that he rejected the evil empire in the process just makes the excellent start to his Chelsea career all that much sweeter.
