Werder Bremen vs. Chelsea, Preseason Friendly: Half-time report

Werder Bremen 1-3 Chelsea at the half, Hazard, Oscar, and Costa scoring for the Blues.

Chelsea started like a house on fire and grabbed two quick early goals.  We slacked off a bit then and the hosts grew into the match, wasting a couple good chances before Nemanja Matic hacked down Junuzovic (who had rattled the crossbar earlier) for a stonewall penalty.  Former Blue Claudio Pizarro made no mistake.  Just before the half-time whistle, Hazard's through ball found Diego Costa and he opened his preseason account with a cool finish.

The first two goals came from Eden Hazard after a short corner found him in acres of space at the top of the box, and Oscar after a really nice team move that had Werder chasing ghosts.  Oscar has been arguably the team's best player of the half, playing in some sort of a hybrid role between a box-to-box midfielder and a second striker in this 4-1-4-1/4-3-3-ish formation.  Hazard has also looked sharp, as has Kanté — though not even he has been able to completely paper over the cracks of the back four plus Matić.

So, a good performance from Chelsea going forward, less so in defense.  One more half of preseason to go.  Come on, Chelsea!
