Chelsea to go after German international fullback three days too late — report

Another solution from the Bundesliga?

After returning Baba Rahman to the Bundesliga and loaning out Nathan Ake once again, Chelsea have only youngster Ola Aina left as backup at full back. While Aina is capable of playing on either flank, this is not an ideal situation.

According to ESPN, Chelsea are looking to address this gap by going after 26-time Germany international Jonas Hector, who also plays in the Bundesliga but could possibly acclimate to England a bit better than his younger counterpart. Liverpool are also believed to be interested in the 26-year-old Hector, just in case they want at least a semblance of sanity at left back after the reign of Alberto Moreno.

The trouble with this rumor is that Hector signed a new contract with Köln just three days ago, extending his stay with the club until 2021. ESPN’s sources claim that this deal ain’t no thing, and that it won’t stop Chelsea from making an approach. Which of course we’re free to do whenever we’d like, just as Köln are free to laugh in our faces whenever they’d like.

Trying to add a left back to our current squad makes sense. Going for a player who has just extended his contract with his club does not.
